Community Education

Our Public Education Team has been a top priority of this Fire District since the inception of the program in 1978. In keeping with the Public Education mission statement, "To provide quality educational programs for all ages emphasizing community safety", the team strives to provide diversified programs consistent with our communities needs. Briefly, some of the programs we provide annually: CPR in the schools (7th grade); Winter Wilderness Survival - geared for our 4th graders, we collaborate with Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue; Water Safety targeted for our 3rd through 5th graders, in collaboration with US Coast Guard, and Inc line General Improvement District (IVGID) lifeguards. We also offer our Annual Paramedic Refresher in November which provides 27 hours of CME's of the annual 48 hours (section 1) required for bi-annual recertification by NREMT per DOT recommendations.

Some new programs we've added to our line up include "Risk Watch", a comprehensive safety prevention program targeted for kindergarten through 8th grades. The curriculum focuses on eight different safety topics and allows the teachers to incorporate it right into their teaching planbooks. Adopted by the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), this program teaches safety prevention essentials effectively and efficiently.

Our "Youth & Family Safety" program is a direct result of "growing with our communities needs". Originally the "Juvenile Forester" program, this monthly workshop now incorporates a wide variety of topics and situations that our teens face today. Collaborating with our school educators, counselors, law enforcement and probation officers, our Youth & Family Safety Team helps students to recognize the importance, impact and consequences of the daily decisions and choices they make.

Continuing to grow, change and evolve with our community's needs and provide the highest quality of education in fire safety and prevention, our team has diversified its reach into many programs and market segments. Working primarily with our local schools and service clubs, we strive to reach every child every school year and make informative and educational presentations to the service clubs on topics such as Defensible Space, CPR/AED and 1st Aid, Emergency Preparedness and Home Safety - a checklist that reviews safety items to be aware of, both inside and outside of the home. These are just a sampling of our public outreach efforts, for more information on any of our programs, please email info@nltfpd.net.
