Seasonal Firefighter / Crew Member- $10.00 to $12.00 per hr. DOE


Duties: Participates fully in the fire districts hazardous fuels reduction program. Independently engages in arduous, physical, manual labor with the use of power and specialized hand tools to reduce, remove or otherwise modify forest vegetation or fuels. Crewmembers cut, chop, pile, chip and burn, brush, slash and small diameter trees.Under supervision Crewmembers use power tools, specialized hand tools, and fire suppression equipment to construct fire line, install and remove hose lays, mop up, hot spot, cold trail, hold, patrol, and implement firing techniques in the suppression of wildland vegetation fires and prescribed burns. Performs duties in all phases of wildland fire suppression including initial attack, extended attack, large incidents (project fires), rehabilitation, and staging for pre-positioning during high to extreme fire danger. All hand crew work involves hiking, lifting, bending, and carrying heavy loads in mountainous terrain on steep slopes varying between 30 to 90%. All Crewmembers must be able to regularly lift 65lbs or 1/3 of their total weight. Crewmembers work in extreme weather conditions from the low teens of a Tahoe winter to summer high desert temperature's over100 degrees. Crewmembers must display the ability to show good judgement, and safe work practices during shift lengths of 16 to 24 HR. for a 16 day period. All crewmembers participate and lead in a daily physical training program consisting of 30 to 45 min. of cardiovascular challenge and 15 to 20 min of strength training exercises.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or successful certification of equivalency (GED); minimum of 18 years of age prior to application; possession of a valid Class C driver’s license prior to appointment and maintenance of such during the course of employment.

DESIRABLE QUALFICATIONS INCLUDE: Working knowledge of the principles and practices of fuels reduction; experience with power and hand tools; knowledge of and ability to construct firelines; ability to read maps and ability to work well within a team environment; at least one year as a handcrew or firecrew member. Volunteer experience is creditable and should be included if appropriate to this position. Desirable training will include: S-130 (Basic Wildland Firefighter), S-190 (Introduction to Fire Behavior), I-110 (Introduction to ICS), S-212 (Power Saws), S-230 (Crew Boss); S-290 (Intermediate Fire Behavior); CPR and basic first aid certification; commerical drivers license.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The handcrew consists of hourly, at-will, employees. Work hours will normally involve 40 hour work weeks, but are variable and may include weekends, evenings, and/or holidays. The length of employment is expected to last approximately 6 months, but may vary and, ultimately, will be determined by the Fire Chief, considering workload, fire season status, and other factors.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Qualified applicants will be selected to participate in the hiring process. Applications will be screened for minimum qualifications. A physical abilities test will be administered, and only the candidates with a passing score will be allowed to continue. An oral interview and resume review will be administered. Any applicable preference points (Veterans and Auxiliary personnel) will be added to candidate’s scores. The Department may conduct conditional hiring interviews, and candidates offered employment must pass a comprehensive background investigation and medical exam. All candidates offered employment will have a State and Federal fingerprint check. Failure to pass any examination or evaluation will be cause for rejection.

APPLICATION AND RESUME REQUIREMENTS: A North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District application, filled out in its entirety and a resume (if desired) must be filed with the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District at 866 Oriole Way, Incline Village, NV 89451. Resumes may not be filed in lieu of a completed application form.

Submit attachments which validate qualifications only (i.e. EMT certificate and CPR card). DO NOT SUBMIT ORIGINALS. Do not submit letters of recommendation, portfolios, etc. Anything submitted becomes the property of the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and these materials will be discarded. Any misrepresentation or misstatement of facts on the application/attachments or incomplete applications will be grounds for disqualification or termination. Applications are required to keep the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District informed, in writing, of any changes in mailing address during the entire examination and evaluation process. All information presented will be verified and supplemented by investigation, which may cover the employment record and character of the applicant.
